    Novel cell surface receptors during mammalian fertilization and development.Helen J. Hathaway & Barry D. Shur - 1988 - Bioessays 9 (5):153-158.
Embryogenesis requires the precise movement and reorganization of many cell and tissue types. Presumably, cell surface receptors allow cells to interact selectively with adjacent cells and with the extracellular environment, as well as initiate differentiative events by transducing appropriate signals across the plasma membrane. One cell surface component that serves as a receptor during a variety of cellular interactions is β1,4‐galactosyltransferase. Cell surface galactosyltransferase participates in diverse cellular interactions by binding its specific glycoconjugate substrate on adjacent cell surfaces or in (...)

The indescribable God: divine otherness in Christian theology.Barry D. Smith - 2012 - Eugene, Oregon: Pickwick Publications.
The God of classical Christian faith is radically transcendent--utterly beyond understanding and words. So if God is to be known it must be in the luminous darkness of unknowing. Drawing on a wide range of primary sources--biblical, patristic, and medieval--Barry D. Smith identifies and explores seven ways of expressing the otherness of God in classical Christian thinking. By allowing historical theologians to speak for themselves, he shows how an aversion to ontotheology long precedes postmodernism. The book first lays out (...)

    Large cardinals and gap-1 morasses.Andrew D. Brooke-Taylor & Sy-David Friedman - 2009 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 159 (1-2):71-99.
We present a new partial order for directly forcing morasses to exist that enjoys a significant homogeneity property. We then use this forcing in a reverse Easton iteration to obtain an extension universe with morasses at every regular uncountable cardinal, while preserving all n-superstrong , hyperstrong and 1-extendible cardinals. In the latter case, a preliminary forcing to make the GCH hold is required. Our forcing yields morasses that satisfy an extra property related to the homogeneity of the partial order; we (...)

    Groundwater quality: Responsible agriculture and public perceptions. [REVIEW]M. J. Goss & D. A. J. Barry - 1995 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 8 (1):52-64.
The chief sources of groundwater contamination on farms come from point sources and diffuse sources. Possible point sources are feedlots, poorly-sited manure piles, septic sewage-treatment systems—all of which can release nitrate, phosphates and bacteria— and sites of chemical spills. Diffuse sources are typified by excess fertilizer leaching from a number of arable fields. The basis of quality standards for drinking-water is discussed in relation to common contaminants present on farms. Samples of drinking-water were collected in 1991–1992 from wells on about (...)

    Biological consequences of targeting β1,4‐galactosyltransferase to two different subcellular compartments.Susan C. Evans, Adel Youakim & Barry D. Shur - 1995 - Bioessays 17 (3):261-268.
Abstractβ1,4‐galactosyltransferase is unusual among the glycosyltransferases in that it is found in two subcellular compartments where it performs two distinct functions. In the trans‐Golgi complex, galactosyltransferase participates in oligosaccharide biosynthesis, as do the other glycosyltransferases. On the cell surface, however, galactosyltransferase associates with the cytoskeleton and functions as a receptor for extracellular oligosaccharide ligands. Although we now know much regarding galactosyltransferase function in these two compartments, little is known about how it is targeted to these different sites. By cloning the (...)

Evolutionary Games in Natural, Social, and Virtual Worlds.Daniel Friedman & Barry Sinervo - 2016 - Oxford University Press USA.
Over the last 25 years, evolutionary game theory has grown with theoretical contributions from the disciplines of mathematics, economics, computer science and biology. It is now ripe for applications. In this book, Daniel Friedman---an economist trained in mathematics---and Barry Sinervo---a biologist trained in mathematics---offer the first unified account of evolutionary game theory aimed at applied researchers. They show how to use a single set of tools to build useful models for three different worlds: the natural world studied by (...)

    Investigating Involuntary Manslaughter: An Empirical Study of 127 Cases.Barry Mitchell & R. D. Mackay - 2011 - Oxford Journal of Legal Studies 31 (1):165-191.
In the past the law relating to involuntary manslaughter has been the subject of much criticism and controversy, though surprisingly it has received comparatively little attention during the recent review of the homicide law by the Law Commission and the Ministry of Justice. As far as the authors are aware, there has hitherto been no objective empirical research into cases of involuntary manslaughter in England and Wales. Based on data collected from case files maintained by HM Court Service and the (...)

“Knowledge Value Alliances”: An Alternative to the R&D Project Focus in Evaluation.Barry Bozeman & Juan D. Rogers - 2001 - Science, Technology, and Human Values 26 (1):23-55.
The question of what the relevant entities or units of analysis for studying the dynamics of R&D are is central not only for adequate characterizations of the system of scientific and technological knowledge production but also for determining the correct focus for evaluation of R&D activities. Typically, R&D performance evaluations have focused not only on the wrong thing but have looked in the wrong place. Most evaluations have been project or program based. Often this focus is misleading. This article presents (...)

When Organizations Don’t Walk Their Talk: A Cross-Level Examination of How Decoupling Formal Ethics Programs Affects Organizational Members.D. Kip Holderness, Barrie E. Litzky & Tammy MacLean - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 128 (2):351-368.
This research illustrates dangers inherent in the gap created when organizations decouple ethics program adoption from implementation. Using a sample of 182 professionals in the pharmaceutical and financial services industries, we examine the relationship between structural decoupling of formal ethics programs and individual-level perceptions and behavior. Findings strongly support the hypothesized relationships between decoupling and organizational members’ legitimacy perceptions of the ethics program, psychological contract breach, organizational cynicism, and unethical behavior.

    Genericity and large cardinals.Sy D. Friedman - 2005 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 5 (02):149-166.
We lift Jensen's coding method into the context of Woodin cardinals. By a theorem of Woodin, any real which preserves a "strong witness" to Woodinness is set-generic. We show however that there are class-generic reals which are not set-generic but preserve Woodinness, using "weak witnesses".

Let n ≥ 3 be an integer. We show that it is consistent that every σ1n-set of reals is universally Baire yet there is a projective well-ordering of the reals. The proof uses “David’s trick” in the presence of inner models with strong cardinals.

Health Humanities Reader.Therese Jones, Delese Wear & Lester D. Friedman (eds.) - 2014 - Rutgers University Press.
Over the past forty years, the health humanities, previously called the medical humanities, has emerged as one of the most exciting fields for interdisciplinary scholarship, advancing humanistic inquiry into bioethics, human rights, health care, and the uses of technology. It has also helped inspire medical practitioners to engage in deeper reflection about the human elements of their practice. In _Health Humanities Reader_, editors Therese Jones, Delese Wear, and Lester D. Friedman have assembled fifty-four leading scholars, educators, artists, and clinicians (...)

We establish the equiconsistency of a simple statement in definability theory with the failure of the GCH at all infinite cardinals. The latter was shown by Foreman and Woodin to be consistent, relative to the existence of large cardinals.

In the era of “big data,” science is increasingly information driven, and the potential for computers to store, manage, and integrate massive amounts of data has given rise to such new disciplinary fields as biomedical informatics. Applied ontology offers a strategy for the organization of scientific information in computer-tractable form, drawing on concepts not only from computer and information science but also from linguistics, logic, and philosophy. This book provides an introduction to the field of applied ontology that is of (...)
